Debunking 5 SEO Myths
Yes, they’re everywhere! They’re even in social media ads, specifically on Facebook, that’s where I saw them, ads containing many different myths revolving around SEO. Some of those claims and myths that I saw include:
- Content is all you need for SEO
- Linking is dead
- Page speed isn’t important
- Keyword spamming ranks
- PPC helps
- More pages = better ranking
So here we go, in this article, I’ll be going over each and every claim and debunking them one by one.
Content Is All That’s Needed
Content is king, or content is god, hell I’ve used this sentence myself before once or twice. While content is important, it’s not the only thing you need in your SEO campaign. Search engine optimization is composed of many different elements that work together hand in hand to ensure that you rank. So, yes, it is important, but it’s not the only thing that is needed.
Links Don’t Work
This is probably one of the claims that really annoy me and one that I see or hear quite often. Linking is an important part of any SEO campaign and if utilised correctly, it will help you rank better. In short, link building is not dead and very important.
I will be covering linking in another article at a later point.
Page Speed Isn’t Important
I’ve heard this one from a client that hired me to handle their SEO campaign. This one is definitely false! Page speed is actually very important and it’s been becoming more important with time.
Page speed can be thought of as part of user experience and Google tries to serve the best results to any user. If a user has to click on your link and wait a while for the page to load then they will definitely be exiting, meaning that you’re offering a poor user experience. That being said, Google takes into consideration how fast your website loads, the faster, the better.
Keyword “Spamming” Ranks
I’m using the word “spamming” for a reason, and that’s because if you’re focusing on having high keyword density within your web pages then that’s exactly what you’re doing, spamming!
This was true about a decade ago, back when meta keywords were still relevant, they’re not anymore. Back then, you could have created a website and spammed it with your target keyword as much as possible, and that would have helped you to rank. Now, that doesn’t work anymore and the only thing it would cause is to ruin your content.
PPC Helps With Ranking
While your search ads campaign and SEO campaign should work hand in hand, yet ads don’t help you rank better. This one is simple, buying ads will not garauntee you appear in the top organic results.
More Pages = Better Ranking
It’s really about quality and not quantity and I’m sure you’ve heard this somewhere before, haven’t you?
Adding more pages to your website will not guarantee you rank. In this case, your focus in your SEO campaign should be on providing quality content rather than publishing a lot of meaningless pages. Simply put, 3 or 4 high-quality pages are better than 10 low-quality ones.
