Creating an Instagram Account

Creating an Instagram account is easy and only takes a few minutes.
Different options to create an Instagram account:
- Use an existing Facebook account
- Sign up with a phone number
- Sign up with an email address
Once you have chosen how you would like to create your account, you will be asked to provide some basic information about yourself. This includes your name, username, password, and profile picture. After you have entered this information, you will be taken to your profile page where you can start sharing photos and videos!
Setting Your Instagram Notification Preferences
The first thing you should do after creating your account is to adjust your notification preferences. By default, Instagram will send you notifications for everything, which can be quite overwhelming.
To adjust your notification preferences:
- Tap the burger menu icon in the top right corner of your profile page and then select settings
- Tap notifications
- From here, you can turn off notifications for specific types of activity, or you can adjust the frequency with which you receive notifications
- Tap on each type of notification to adjust how often you want to receive them
Connecting Instagram to Other Social Accounts
You can connect your Instagram account to other social media accounts, such as Facebook and Twitter. This allows you to share your photos and videos on those platforms, as well as to see the activity from your other social media accounts on Instagram.
To connect your Instagram account to other social media accounts:
- Tap the burger menu icon in the top right corner of your profile page and then select settings
- Tap on “account” and then on “sharing to other apps”

Posting on Instagram
Now that you have your account set up the way you want it, it’s time to start sharing content!
Unlike Facebook, Instagram is focused on enabling its users to share experiences and knowledge through images and videos.
On Facebook, you could create an album with 100 photos. Whereas on Instagram, you must be more selective about your posts. There are several reasons for this — first and foremost, you might not want to post more than once a day or post the same images or images from the same event/vacation too frequently. Instead, you might opt in to post a carousel post containing up to 10 different images all at once.
Previously, it used to be as easy as taping on the plus icon in the bottom middle of your screen and choosing the image/video you wanted to post, and sharing it to the platform.
Instagram over the past year changed that plus icon with the reel feed icon and moved the plus icon to the top, just to the left of the notifications icon.
So, let’s get started, to post:
- Tap on the plus sign at the top right corner of your screen
- Select the image or video you want to post from your camera roll, or take a new photo or video
- Add a filter, if needed, and edit your image
- Add text, tags, and/or a location
- Press “Share” in the top right corner
- Tap on the plus sign at the top left corner of your screen
- Select “Story” from the menu that appears
- Capture or select a photo or video to post
- Add text, tags, and/or a location
- Publish your story by clicking on the white arrow icon in the bottom right
Tips to Getting Followers on Instagram
Now that you know how to post on Instagram, we’ll share a few tips on how to get followers.
When you first start using Instagram, it can be difficult to build up your following. This is because people generally follow accounts that they are interested in and that provide valuable content.
Here are a few hacks to help increase your following:
Hashtags
Using hashtags is one of the best ways to reach a new audience on Instagram. When you use a hashtag, your post becomes searchable and people who are interested in that topic can find it.
You should use relevant hashtags for each post, and don’t be afraid to use multiple hashtags. Just make sure that the hashtags you use are relevant to your post and aren’t too long.
Follow Others
When you follow others, they might be more likely to follow you back. You can find interesting people to follow by searching for hashtags or by following accounts that are related to your interests.
Engage with Your Followers
When you engage with your followers, they are more likely to stick around and continue following your account. You can engage with your followers by liking and commenting on their posts, and by responding to comments on your own posts.
Post Quality Content
This one seems obvious, but it’s worth repeating: people will only follow you if they’re interested in the content you post. Make sure to post interesting and valuable content that is relevant to your audience.
